Riot Shield in 99 Nights: holding it protects you but prevents attacks

The Riot Shield reduces incoming damage while you hold it and can block arrows. It can be used alongside body armor: it does not replace that piece, and carrying it in your inventory should not be treated as active protection.

One acquisition route

A documented route is searching Ruby Chests. You need to reach one and survive the expedition; opening it does not guarantee a shield. The Tool Workshop is another source, but this entry covers the loot route rather than a crafting recipe.

1. Find and reach a Ruby Chest with a return route planned.
2. Open the chest and inspect the loot.
3. Collect a Riot Shield if one appears and check its name.
4. Select it to hold it; picking it up alone is not enough.

Using it without losing your attack

You cannot attack with a weapon while holding the Riot Shield. You must alternate between protection and drawing your weapon. Editorial recommendation: put both items in easy-to-select positions before a fight instead of rearranging your inventory while under attack.

Use it to cover a dangerous moment, then switch to your weapon when you want to respond. Do not assume partial protection lets you ignore enemies, traps or a necessary retreat: the shield does not remove all damage.

Checking success and mistakes

If you try to attack and nothing happens while the shield is in your hand, check the selected item before assuming combat is broken. Do not attribute protection to simply storing it either.
